Six reasons why Ben Laidler highly recommends the Whilton Mill Karting Academy.

24 Feb 2025

In 2024, Whilton Mill launched a Karting Academy for drivers aged 6-11, creating a clear pathway for young racers eager to develop their skills and enter competitive motorsport.

As the home of a thriving club for Motorsport UK-licensed competitors racing in their own machinery, it was a natural progression for Whilton Mill to support novice drivers looking to take their first steps into competitive karting. The academy focuses on building essential driving skills and strong foundations for future success.

In year one, pupils learn the science of speed through a unique modular program. In year two, they put their skills to the test by competing in an arrive & drive championship run by Whilton Mill, bridging the gap between training and real racing.

Ben Laidler, father to Thomas Laidler from the class of 2024, highly recommends the Whilton Mill Karting Academy to any parent with a child interested in competitive go-karting and here are Ben’s six reasons why.

Expert Coaching and Support: The team at WMKA is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about karting. Not only do they offer top-tier coaching, but they also focus on building mental fortitude, which is essential in competitive racing. Moreover, the coaches are patient and experienced, knowing exactly how to nurture young talent while ensuring they develop the right mindset and approach to racing.

State-of-the-Art Facilities: Furthermore, the circuit at Whilton Mill is renowned as one of the best in the country, offering a safe and exciting environment for children to learn and compete. In addition, the equipment is well-maintained, and the venue itself is both professional and welcoming for young racers.

Focus on Enjoyment and Development: While it’s a competitive environment, WMKA truly emphasizes fostering a love for the sport and personal growth. More importantly, my child has had so much fun while developing as a racer. It’s not just about winning; rather, it’s about improving and enjoying the journey, which is crucial for young drivers.

Building Confidence and Discipline: Beyond racing skills, karting at this level teaches children valuable life lessons, such as discipline, responsibility, teamwork, and resilience. As a result, watching them face challenges, learn from mistakes, and improve their performance significantly boosts their confidence both on and off the track.

Community and Camaraderie: Additionally, the academy fosters a great sense of community. My child has formed strong friendships with other young racers who share the same passion. This supportive environment, in turn, has kept him motivated and excited about the sport.

Clear Pathways for Progression: Most importantly, WMKA offers structured programs that guide kids through the ranks of competitive karting. Whether your child is just starting or already showing potential, there’s a clear pathway for them to continue improving and eventually take on more serious racing opportunities.

Prices for the training modules in year 1 are £80 per module and championship races in year 2 are £75 per race.
